Comrade Robert Mugabe assumes African Union leadership

Zimbabwe president calls on Africa to harness resources for its own ends as members urged to tackle infrastructure, climate change, conflict and Ebola Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s 90-year-old president, has assumed the chairmanship of the African Union (AU) with a call for members to improve infrastructure and tackle climate change, conflict and Ebola, and with a familiar rallying cry that Africa’s wealth belongs to Africa and not “imperialists and colonialists”. The veteran leader, who was elected head of the union on Friday, replaces President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, of Mauritania. “By electing me to preside over this august body, with full knowledge of the onerous responsibility that lies ahead, I humbly accept your collective decision,” Mugabe told the AU summit in Addis Ababa. “I do so, confident that I can always count on your full support and cooperation in the execution of the important mandate you have given me.” The president, who has led Zimbabwe since 1980, said the f

African Union: President Robert Mugabe should urgently address human rights concerns

President Mugabe should use his time as Chairperson to restore stability in parts of the region that have been ravaged by conflicts,” said Netsanet Belay, Amnesty International’s Africa Director for Research and Advocacy. The 24th Ordinary Session of the AU – that has taken the theme “2015: Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development Towards Africa’s Agenda 2063” is taking place at a time when the continent is facing protracted conflicts that have displaced millions of people. The shrinking of political space and denial of fundamental rights are also major problems in countries such as Angola, Burundi, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia and Zimbabwe. 2015 will also see 19 African countries holding elections with nine taking place in the first quarter. This includes Nigeria which is currently facing constant attacks from the militant group Boko Haram.  African Union: President Robert Mugabe should urgently address human rights concerns

How To Talk To Rwandan Rulers: First Flatter Them, And Then Hit Hard With Truth

Lagarde was only warming up. Here she is with another flattery: "Since the early 2000s, Rwanda has grown at an average of about 8 percent—well above the regional average and on par with emerging Asia. Per capita income has more than trebled, and while poverty is still high—at about 45 percent of the population—the poorest have shared the benefits of growth. This is a remarkable feat." And then she hits them below the belt: "Mobilizing domestic revenues will be critical in creating fiscal space as reliance on aid gradually recedes. At 16 percent of GDP, the tax collection effort is still low compared to peers in Africa, and well below the 25 percent target set by the East African Community." In plain language: you guys get serious. You cannot claim success when your economy is driven by aid which remains as high as 15 percent of GDP and 40 percent of your government spending. This is no success story. Low tax collection makes you a lousy performer even by African sta

Farmers in southern Malawi in urgent need after intense flooding, UN agency warns

The Government hopes its plan will help to put affected farmers back on track to plant and harvest food during the agricultural season, and FAO will work closely with them to supply short-cycle varieties of maize, rice, sweet potato, cowpeas, vegetable seeds and cassava cuttings for urgent replanting. The hope is that some fields and crops could be ready by June, mitigating the need to rely on long-term humanitarian programs. At the same time, local families need new livestock to ensure animal protein intake, and irrigation facilities must be restored before the dry season to ensure food production. Untold numbers of goats and chickens have perished where waters rose with unexpected speed, while remaining livestock is at heightened risk of disease outbreaks.      Farmers in southern Malawi in urgent need after intense flooding, UN agency warns : Farmers in southern Malawi in urgent need after intense flooding, UN agency warns

Kasambara back in a Malawi court accused of attempted murder on Paul Mphwiyo

Raphael Kasambara is both defendant and defence attorney in the case. When the proceedings last adjourned Kasambara was cross-examining victim Paul Mphwiyo raising a lot of inconsistences and flustering Mr Paul Mphwiyo. Oswald Lutepo is the chief cashgate suspect, accused of looting MK5.4 billion. He implicated former Malawi president, Joyce Banda, in his case. Ralph Kasambara also named Joyce Banda as a potential defence witness. The former President Joyce Banda has not been seen in Malawi since losing the elections to Peter Mutharika in May of 2014.    Kasambara back in a Malawi court accused of attempted murder on Paul Mphwiyo : Kasambara back in a Malawi court accused of attempted murder on Paul Mphwiyo

State House Chief Mukhito ignores court order Redeploys Household staff

The development forced the Lawyer representing the victims, William Zapinga to ask the Court to commit Mukhito and the other officers to prison for not obeying a court order. However this is very unlikely. The Court might order other remedies rather than the extreme punishment of arresting government officials for such a trivial matter as staffing matters.   State House Chief Mukhito ignores court order Redeploys Household staff : State House Chief Mukhito ignores court order Redeploys Household staff
